Cross Cutting and Drilling Posts
Pressure treated timber posts are protected by a preservative barrier created during the treatment process. To help maintain the lifespan and performance of the timber, unnecessary cutting, drilling, or heavy machining should be avoided where possible, as exposed timber may become more vulnerable to moisture and decay over time.
If cutting or drilling is required during installation, applying a suitable end-grain preservative to any exposed timber surfaces, drilled holes, or notches is recommended. This helps maintain the protective treatment and improve long-term durability.
Post Installation
Correct installation is important to maximise the lifespan and performance of timber posts. When installing posts into the ground, allowing water to drain away from the base of the post can help reduce moisture build-up and improve durability.
A common installation method is to place gravel, ballast, or loose stone at the bottom of the post hole before positioning the post and securing it using post-mix or concrete. Slightly sloping the finished post-mix away from the timber can also help direct water away from the post and improve drainage around the installation area.
